Overseas Chinese Communities Hold Simultaneous Commemoration for Nanjing Massacre Victims
On December 13, the Jiangsu Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and the Nanjing Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese jointly held the 2024 Simultaneous Memorial Ceremony for the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre. The main venue was located in Nanjing, while 15 sub-venues were established via live video connections in 12 countries and regions, including the Philippines, South Korea, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Germany, Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, and Macau. A total of 120 overseas Chinese associations, Chinese schools, and student organizations participated in mourning the victims simultaneously. In the lead-up to the event, overseas Chinese communities, regional organizations, and international media collaborated on the “Voices of Peace Through Time and Space” cloud campaign, which engaged more than 300,000 overseas Chinese from over 80 countries and regions.
Canada
At December 7 at 7:20 p.m. Canadian time, the annual online international historical and cultural education forum, themed of the "Solemn and Beautiful Flower of Peace," hosted by Hong Maple Foundation (Canada). Representatives from the Canadian government, the Chinese Consulate-General in Toronto, educators, students, parents, and leaders of cultural organizations and community groups attended the event. Zhang Yingying, the mother of Chinese-American author Zhang Chunru, also participated online. At the forum, attendees held a memorial ceremony to pay tribute to the 300,000 Nanjing Massacre victims and prayed for global peace.
The United States
On December 8, the U.S. time, community members from San Francisco and the Bay Area gathered at the Zhang Chunru Memorial Park in San Jose for a peace rally commemorating the victims of the Nanjing Massacre. Attendees observed a moment of silence in memory of the 300,000 Chinese compatriots who perished. Youth representatives from the Bay Area read the “Declaration of Peace,” urging people to remember history and work together to promote peace and justice. The event was organized by the San Francisco Historical Maintenance Association for War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, with participation from the Nanjing Massacre Claims Alliance and several local Chinese organizations.
Myanmar
On December 13, local time in Myanmar, China Myanmar Economic Cooperation and Development Promotion Association (CMECD) organized a simultaneous memorial ceremony at its Yangon sub-venue, titled “Remembering History and Cherishing Peace.” The event was attended by more than 50 participants, including representatives from the Myanmar office of the China Foundation for Peace and Development, local overseas Chinese, members of friendly political parties, enterprises, schools, and chambers of commerce. Participants watched the National Memorial Ceremony for Nanjing Massacre Victims and collectively read the Declaration for Peace.
Cambodia
On December 13, local time in Cambodia, Cambodia-China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification, the Khmer-Chinese Association In The Kingdom Of Cambodia and the Cambodia China Hong Kong-Macao Overseas Chinese Chamber of Commerce jointly organized a memorial service at the Phnom Penh sub-venue. Representatives of the Chinese and overseas Chinese communities in Cambodia participated in the event. Participants observed a collective moment of silence, watched the national memorial ceremony, recited the “Declaration of Peace,”and also held discussion and exchange activities.
